After School Programs for Special Education Children

Children with learning disabilities and/or health conditions are termed special education children.  These children  are behind other children their age in self care skills, formal learning, and social skills. Some children may not be able to walk, some may talk poorly, or some may just need extra help in math or reading.  There are many programs for special education children and some of the best are after school.

After school programs for special education children are valuable not just for the child, but for the parent as well.  It is very difficult to care for a special education child; parents of these children have little time to themselves.  By placing your child in an after school program,  you (the parent) are giving yourself some free time.  You can use this time to do necessary things like shopping  or taking care of the home.  Parents should use this time wisely, and remember to spend time taking care of themselves and their relationships. Spend this time relaxing, perhaps talking to friends, or time along with their husband and/or wife.

Programs available for special education children include both the formal and the informal. Special education children can benefit from both of these types of after school programs.  The trick is in knowing which kind of program is right for your special education child.  Parents should pick a program that meets their child’s special needs whether the need be speech therapy, self care instruction, or tutoring in math or reading.

After school programs can be  taught by a certified teacher, a child psychologist, or just someone interested in helping children.  If you child just needs extra help in math or reading, an older student who excels in that subject may be all that is needed.

A child psychologist may give your child one-on-one therapy to help your child cope with emotional problems associated with being sick or  being a slow learner.  The psychologist will plan activities geared towards helping the special education child improve and have greater self esteem.

Respite care is also a form of after school program for special education children. Respite care is a way for the parents to have some time alone to work on their relationship and to enjoy each others company.  Respite care workers usually work from the child’s home while the parents go out.

Formal after school programs for special education children will be structured to meet your child’s unique needs. There may be one or several teachers working with your child in a class room with other special education children.  The teachers may take the class to field trips in the community in an effort to help the child learn social skills.   They may also help your child with speech, or feeding one’s self, or hygiene.

There are many types of after school programs for special education children.  These programs have been very successful in helping special education children learn and grow.  Special education children who are able to participate in after school programs are usually more confident and much happier.  An after school program is also valuable to the parent in that they may have time to relax; which leads to a better child-parent relationship.

Do Vaccines Cause Autism?

Autism is a mysterious condition which causes children to withdraw into their own world.  These children do not talk, have a lack of facial expression, are super sensitive to lights and sounds, and often cannot care for themselves. When the child becomes overwhelmed by their environment, they often become uncontrollable and will scream and hit out. Scientists still do not know what causes autism; but some think that there is a link between routine child vaccines and autism.

Autism was first diagnosed by a psychiatrist in the 1930’s; about the same time that children started receiving vaccinations.   These early vaccination contained a type of mercury.  It is interesting to note that one of the first children diagnosed with autism was the son of a man who did scientific experiments using mercury.

The number of children worldwide diagnosed with autism has reached epidemic proportions.  Every year, the number of children with autism continues to rise.  The result is that health care workers and school systems are overburdened and having to invest millions every year towards serving autistic children.

The makers of vaccines defend their products; pointing out that most vaccines no longer contain mercury.  Research on the vaccines that still do contain mercury show that a child is capable of cleaning their bodies of the metal in as little as three days.

Opponents of vaccines are quick to point out that many autistic children were behaving normally until just a few days after they received vaccinations.  Vaccines may no longer contain mercury but they do still contain many other chemicals that are potentially poisonous in large amounts.  Today’s vaccines contain aluminum, animal viral antibodies, and formaldehyde.  Formaldehyde is a chemical used in embalming, paint, and glue. Long term exposure to this chemical is believed to cause sensitivity to the environment, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, and even death.

There is great danger in not having vaccines.  World health workers are worried that, without vaccines, there would be a rise in diseases which can cause handicaps and even death such as : polio, whopping cough, and measles.

With billions world wide being spent on serving children with this disability; it would be best for medical companies to invest money in  finding new ways to make safer vaccinations.

Being a Parent with a Child with ADHD

ADHD is a mental condition in which the brain cannot differentiate between external stamina (such as noise, lights, pictures, etc.).  Children with this condition tend to be  hyperactive, their bodies can not slow down,  they often cannot sleep at night, they lose things easily, and they get poor grades in school.  Being a parent with a child with ADHD is very challenging.  The parent must understand their child’s condition,  know when their child is misbehaving because they cannot control themselves, and be very patient.

The first thing that a parent with a child with ADHD needs to know is the facts about their child’s  condition. Parents  should speak to their child’s doctor frankly, asking any questions they might have,  and any concerns they have.  Parents can also go to their local library and bookstore to read up on the condition.

There are many support groups  for those challenged by being a parent with a child with ADHD.  Support groups allow parents to come together to talk and support one another. By belonging to a support group, the parents realize that they are not alone in their struggles.  They make friends and connect with other parents.  Often support groups are facilitated by a therapist qualified to deal with ADHD issues. With the help of the therapist, parents share the stress they endure and discuss ideas on how to deal with this stress.  The therapist will also share ideas on how parents can help their ADHD child in school and daily life activities.

ADHD children need more guidance than typical children.  It helps to schedule daily activities for this type of child.  Make a calendar and hang it where all family members can see it.  Your child can help pick his/her daily activities such as  leisure time and bed time.  Make the calendar consistent with bed time, dinner time, etc, the same every day. ADHD children are forgetful. The calendar will help the child stay on task without being constantly reminded by the parent.

ADHD children are more emotional than the typical child.  Being a parent with a child with ADHD can be stressful because of the child’s emotional needs.  It is very important that the parent keeps an open dialogue with the ADHD child.  Set aside 15 - 20 minutes every day to talk with your child.   The parent should be open minded to what the child has to say.

School is especially stressful for the ADHD child. These children can not help but to get distracted; their mind wandering away from the teacher’s lessons. The child is not being lazy or stupid. The ADHD child’s brain is not equipped to concentrate for long periods of time. ADHD children need special services in school.  These services should include: shorter lesson time with longer breaks in between subjects;  a tutor,  testing conducted in a way that is more in sync with the child’s condition,  and teacher’s specially trained to deal with the ADHD child.
